DETAILED ACTION
Notice of Pre-AIA or AIA Status
The present application, filed on or after March 16, 2013, is being examined under the first inventor to file provisions of the AIA .
Drawings
The drawings are objected to because of the following problems.
The drawings are objected to under 37 CFR 1.83(a). The drawings must show every feature of the invention specified in the claims. Therefore, the second opening positioned on the interface side (recited in claim 19) must be shown or the feature(s) canceled from the claim(s). No new matter should be entered.
Figures 1C and 1D show the window 116 and the interior space 114 being adjacent to the connector end 104. However, Figures 1A and 1B shows the connector end 104 is not adjacent to the window 116 and the interior space 114 because the window 116 and the interior space 114 are located in the body between the end 108 of the power cable 110 and the connector end 104. It is not clear whether the body located in between the end 108 of the power cable 110 and the connector end 104 and containing the window 116 and the interior space 114 is a part of the connector end 104 or an element separate from the connector end 104.
The drawings are objected to as failing to comply with 37 CFR 1.84(p)(4) because reference character “308” has been used to designate both computing device and edge connector.
In Figure 1F, two of the reference numbers “104” are shown and these two 104 are pointing at two different places.
“a second opening” of a connector end and “an interface side” recited in claim 19 are not identified with a corresponding assigned reference number with a line pointing at each of the second opening and the interface side.
The drawings are objected to as failing to comply with 37 CFR 1.84(p)(5) because they do not include the following reference sign(s) mentioned in the description:
“512” for piezochromic material described in Paragrpah [0051], line 3 and “514” for a window in Paragrpah [0051], line 5.
Corrected drawing sheets in compliance with 37 CFR 1.121(d) are required in reply to the Office action to avoid abandonment of the application. Any amended replacement drawing sheet should include all of the figures appearing on the immediate prior version of the sheet, even if only one figure is being amended. The figure or figure number of an amended drawing should not be labeled as “amended.” If a drawing figure is to be canceled, the appropriate figure must be removed from the replacement sheet, and where necessary, the remaining figures must be renumbered and appropriate changes made to the brief description of the several views of the drawings for consistency. Additional replacement sheets may be necessary to show the renumbering of the remaining figures. Each drawing sheet submitted after the filing date of an application must be labeled in the top margin as either “Replacement Sheet” or “New Sheet” pursuant to 37 CFR 1.121(d). If the changes are not accepted by the examiner, the applicant will be notified and informed of any required corrective action in the next Office action. The objection to the drawings will not be held in abeyance.
Specification
The disclosure is objected to because of the following informalities:
Paragraph [0029], lines 3-5 describe, “Referring to FIG 1A, the connector end 104 operatively connected to an end 108 of a power cable 110.” However, Paragraph [0031], lines 2-3 describes, “the connector end 104 of the power cable 110.” According to Paragraph [0029], lines 1-2, the connector end 104 belongs to the cable connector 100 and according to lines 4-5 the connector end 104 is operatively connected to an end 108 of a power cable 110. Therefore, the end of the power cable 110 is the end 108 and not the connector end 104.
Paragraph [0035], lines 4-5 describe, “The window 116 has a surface 132 that opposes surface 132”. It is not clear how the surface 132 can oppose itself.
Paragraph [0036], line 2 describes, “a side 134”, line 3 describes, “the surface 134”. The examiner advises the applicant to use the same terminology with the same reference number consistently throughout the entire specification for clear understanding.
Paragraph [0044], line 7, it seems that “the connector end 304” should be -- the connector end 302 -- because line 1 identified the reference number 304 as the piezochromic material and line 2 identified the reference number 302 as the connector end.
Appropriate correction is required.
Claim Rejections - 35 USC § 112
The following is a quotation of 35 U.S.C. 112(b):
(b) CONCLUSION.—The specification shall conclude with one or more claims particularly pointing out and distinctly claiming the subject matter which the inventor or a joint inventor regards as the invention.
The following is a quotation of 35 U.S.C. 112 (pre-AIA ), second paragraph:
The specification shall conclude with one or more claims particularly pointing out and distinctly claiming the subject matter which the applicant regards as his invention.
Claims 1-20 are rejected under 35 U.S.C. 112(b) or 35 U.S.C. 112 (pre-AIA ), second paragraph, as being indefinite for failing to particularly point out and distinctly claim the subject matter which the inventor or a joint inventor (or for applications subject to pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, the applicant), regards as the invention.
Claim 1, line 1 recites, “A connector comprising”. It is not clear whether the claimed invention, “A connector” is a mechanical connector, an electrical connector, or both mechanical and electrical connector because many different types of connectors exist in the world.
Claim 1, line 2 recites, “a connector end that defines an interior space” and line 4 recites, “a window integrated into the connector end”. In view of the drawings, the window 116 is separated from the connector end 104 by a body of the cable connector 100 placed in between the connector end 104 and the end 108 of the power cable 110. The drawings clearly show the window 116 is integrated into the body of the cable connector 100 and not integrated into the connector end 104. Therefore, it is not clear how the connector end 104 can define the interior space 114 and how the window 116 can be integrated into the connector end 104.
Claim 2 recites, “the connector end is a connector end of an electrical cable.” It is not clear how the connector end 104 can be the connector end of the electrical cable 110 when the electrical cable 110 is placed adjacent to the end 108, which is located at one end of the cable connector 100 while the connector end 104 is located at other end of the cable connector 100 opposite of the one end of the cable connector 100.
Claim 10, line 2 reciting “a connector comprising” has the same problem as claim 1, line 1 stated above. Also, claim 10, lines 3 and 6 have the same problem as claim 1, lines 2 and 4 as stated above.
Claim 19 recites a second opening and an interface side, wherein the second opening is position on the interface side. However, because the second opening and the interface side are not assigned with their corresponding reference numbers and not identified in the drawings with lines pointing at them. Also, Figures 4A and 4B are the only figures in the drawings showing the covering 402, but Figures 4A and 4B only show partial view of the connector, which only show one opening 404 and do not show two openings and the interface side. Therefore, the structure of the connector cannot be clearly understood.
