As for claim 37, limitations of parent claim 35 have been discussed above. Claim 37 reflects article of manufacture comprising computer executable instructions for implementing method in claim 33 and is rejected along the same rationale. Response to Arguments Applicant argues “Zhang doesn't disclose the features of claim 18 of ‘displaying a first interface, wherein the first interface comprises a first service widget and a second service widget, the first service widget comprises M service subwidgets of a first application of the electronic device, the second service widget comprises N service subwidgets of a second application of the electronic device, M is an integer greater than i, and N is an integer greater than 1’ or ‘displaying a second interface, wherein the second interface comprises a third service widget, the third service widget comprises X service subwidgets in the M service subwidgets and Y service subwidgets in the N service subwidgets, X is an integer greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to M, and Y is an integer greater than or eaual to 1 and less than or eaual to N’”, (Remarks page 10-11) because “Zhang doesn't teach or suggest two or more service subwidgets that are of the same application…. Zhang doesn't teach or suggest merging a previously merged combination of two icons into another previously merged set of two icons”. In response to Applicant’s argument that the references fail to show certain features of Applicant’s invention, it is noted that during patent examination, the pending claims must be “given their broadest reasonable interpretation consistent with the specification.” The Federal Circuit’s en banc decision in Phillips v. AWH Corp., 415 F.3d 1303, 75USPQ2d 1321 (Fed. Cir. 2005)”, (MPEP 2111) and that a reference is relevant for all it contains and may be relied upon for all that it would have reasonably suggested to one having ordinary skill in the art. In re Heck, 699 F.2d 1331, 1332-33, 216 U.S.P.Q. 1038, 1039 (Fed. Cir. 1983) (quoting In re Lemelson, 397 F.2d 1006, 1009, 158 U.S.P.Q. 275, 277 (C.C.P.A. 1968)). As stated in the rejection above, Zhang discloses method comprising M subwidget of first application and N subwidget of second application (Zhang paragraph [0013], [0014], [0017], [0042], [0065] discloses first and second icon having service subwidgets, functionality such as sending message and displaying time). Furthermore, as stated in the rejection above newly cited prior art Lee discloses method comprising two or more service subwidgets that are of the same application and merging a previously merged combination of two icons into another previously merged set of two icons (Lee paragraph [0062]-[0063],[0070]-[0073] discloses user can generate a multi-icon by combining first widget, calling icon 21, and second widget, calendar icon 22, together, the generated multi-icon has sub-widgets with calling function and calendar function; Lee paragraph [0073] discloses the first and the second icon combined can be multi-icons, each of the multi-icon having at least two sub-widgets, each multi-icon is an executable application) Applicant argues “Zhang doesn't disclose the features of claim 18 of ‘displaying a first interface, wherein the first interface comprises a first service widget and a second service widget, the first service widget comprises M service subwidgets of a first application of the electronic device, the second service widget comprises N service subwidgets of a second application of the electronic device, M is an integer greater than i, and N is an integer greater than 1’ or ‘displaying a second interface, wherein the second interface comprises a third service widget, the third service widget comprises X service subwidgets in the M service subwidgets and Y service subwidgets in the N service subwidgets, X is an integer greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to M, and Y is an integer greater than or eaual to 1 and less than or eaual to N’”, (Remarks page 10-11) because “Zhang doesn't teach or suggest the combined icons of Zhang are disclosed to have a combined functionality where the functionality of the original icons is altered”. In response to applicants' argument that the reference fails to show certain features of applicants' invention, it is noted that "Though understanding the claim language may be aided by explanations contained in the written description, it is important not to import into a claim limitations that are not part of the claim. For example, a particular embodiment appearing in the written description may not be read into a claim when the claim language is broader than the embodiment." Superguide Corp. v. DirecTV Enterprises, Inc., 358 F.3d 870, 875, 69 USPQ2d. 1865, 1868 (Fed. Cir. 2004). There are no limitations in claim 18 that states “the functionality of the original icons is altered”. Applicant argues “Xia also doesn't disclose the features of claim 18 of "displaying a first interface, wherein the first interface comprises a first service widget and a second service widget, the first service widget comprises M service subwidgets of a first application of the electronic device, the second service widget comprises N service subwidgets of a second application of the electronic device, M is an integer greater than 1, and N is an integer greater than 1" or "displaying a second interface, wherein the second interface comprises a third service widget, the third service widget comprises X service subwidgets in the M service subwidgets and Y service subwidgets in the N service subwidgets, X is an integer greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to M, and Y is an integer greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to N". Xia is not relied upon for rejection of claim 18. Applicant argue “Lv doesn't disclose the features of claim 31 of ‘displaying a first widget, wherein the first widget comprises a first subwidget and a second subwidget, the first subwidget corresponds to a first application of the electronic device, and the second subwidget corresponds to a second application of the electronic device, and the first subwidget and the second subwidget are for different services that rely at least in part on common content,’ and ‘when content displayed on the first subwidget is updated from first content to second content.’ updating, based on the second content, content displayed on the second subwidget”, (Remarks page 13) because “Lv, however, is concerned with page replication in different display regions on a screen, not with service widgets or service subwidgets. Lv is silent on how any service subwidgets are updated. Further, in Lv the updating of the second sub-region is based on a page being replicated to the first sub-region and the second sub-region. Lv doesn't teach or suggest updating different pages corresponding to different applications in the same manner”, (Remarks page 12-13). In response to applicants' argument that the reference fails to show certain features of applicants' invention, it is noted that one cannot show nonobviousness by attacking references individually where the rejections are based on combinations of references (In re Keller, 642 F.2d 413, 208 USPQ 871 (CCPA 1981); In re Merck & Co., Inc., 800 F.2d 1091, 231 USPQ 375 (Fed. Cir. 1986)) and that although the claims are interpreted in light of the specification, the limitations from the specification are not read into the claims. In re Van Geuns, 988 F.2d 1181, 26 USPQ2d 1057 (Fed. Cir. 1993). As stated in the rejection above, Lv is relied up to disclose updating from first to second content, updating, based on second content, content displayed on the second portion. Xia is relied upon to disclose widgets of subwidgets not LV. Furthermore, contrary to applicant’s argument, claim 31 doesn’t have limitation “updating different pages corresponding to different applications in the same manner”. As such, as stated in the rejection above, Xia discloses device and method comprising displaying a first widget, wherein the first widget comprises a first subwidget and a second subwidget, (Xia paragraph [0056]-[0057], [0066]-[0067], [0097] discloses generating and displaying service widget, at least two service cards reorganized and displayed together based and first and second subwidgets, flight ticket service card weather service card) the first subwidget corresponds to a first application of the electronic device, and the second subwidget corresponds to a second application of the electronic device, and the first subwidget and the second subwidget are for different services that rely at least in part on common content; and (Xia paragraph [0075]-[0078], [0085] discloses first subwidget, flight service card, corresponds to Ctrip application and second subwidget, weather service card, corresponds to weather application, the subwidgets are for different services, weather and exchange rate that rely on common content, the weather and exchange rate are for New York) when content displayed on the first subwidget is updated from first content to second content, updating, content displayed on the second subwidget (Xia paragraph [0072], [0079]-[0086] discloses updating content of first subwidget, once user arrives at a destination the content of first subwidget is updated to local information and content on second subwidget is also updated according to local information). Furthermore, as stated in rejection above, Lv discloses method comprising updating the first portion of the display from first to second content, updating, based on second content, content displayed on the second portion (Lv paragraph [0044] discloses updating second content in second sub-region 502 based on updating first content in the first sub-region 501). Conclusion Applicant's amendment necessitated the new ground(s) of rejection presented in this Office action. Accordingly, THIS ACTION IS MADE FINAL. See MPEP § 706.07(a).
