Office Action

§DP
Notice of Pre-AIA or AIA Status The present application, filed on or after March 16, 2013, is being examined under the first inventor to file provisions of the AIA . Information Disclosure Statement The information disclosure statement (IDS) submitted on 02/27/2027 has been considered by the examiner. Drawings The drawing submitted on 02/27/2025 has been accepted. Specification The specification submitted on 02/27/2025 has been accepted. Claim Interpretation The following is a quotation of 35 U.S.C. 112(f): (f) Element in Claim for a Combination. – An element in a claim for a combination may be expressed as a means or step for performing a specified function without the recital of structure, material, or acts in support thereof, and such claim shall be construed to cover the corresponding structure, material, or acts described in the specification and equivalents thereof. The following is a quotation of pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph: An element in a claim for a combination may be expressed as a means or step for performing a specified function without the recital of structure, material, or acts in support thereof, and such claim shall be construed to cover the corresponding structure, material, or acts described in the specification and equivalents thereof. The claims in this application are given their broadest reasonable interpretation using the plain meaning of the claim language in light of the specification as it would be understood by one of ordinary skill in the art. The broadest reasonable interpretation of a claim element (also commonly referred to as a claim limitation) is limited by the description in the specification when 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph, is invoked. As explained in MPEP § 2181, subsection I, claim limitations that meet the following three-prong test will be interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph: (A) the claim limitation uses the term “means” or “step” or a term used as a substitute for “means” that is a generic placeholder (also called a nonce term or a non-structural term having no specific structural meaning) for performing the claimed function; (B) the term “means” or “step” or the generic placeholder is modified by functional language, typically, but not always linked by the transition word “for” (e.g., “means for”) or another linking word or phrase, such as “configured to” or “so that”; and (C) the term “means” or “step” or the generic placeholder is not modified by sufficient structure, material, or acts for performing the claimed function. Use of the word “means” (or “step”) in a claim with functional language creates a rebuttable presumption that the claim limitation is to be treated in accordance with 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph. The presumption that the claim limitation is interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph, is rebutted when the claim limitation recites sufficient structure, material, or acts to entirely perform the recited function. Absence of the word “means” (or “step”) in a claim creates a rebuttable presumption that the claim limitation is not to be treated in accordance with 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph. The presumption that the claim limitation is not interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph, is rebutted when the claim limitation recites function without reciting sufficient structure, material or acts to entirely perform the recited function. Claim limitations in this application that use the word “means” (or “step”) are being interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph, except as otherwise indicated in an Office action. Conversely, claim limitations in this application that do not use the word “means” (or “step”) are not being interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph, except as otherwise indicated in an Office action. This application includes one or more claim limitations that do not use the word “means,” but are nonetheless being interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph, because the claim limitation(s) uses a generic placeholder that is coupled with functional language without reciting sufficient structure to perform the recited function and the generic placeholder is not preceded by a structural modifier. Such claim limitation(s) is/are: a connection controller configured to manage in claims 1 and 14 a connection image controller configured to provide in claims 1 and 14 Because this/these claim limitation(s) is/are being interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph, it/they is/are being interpreted to cover the corresponding structure described in the specification as performing the claimed function, and equivalents thereof. If applicant does not intend to have this/these limitation(s) interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph, applicant may: (1) amend the claim limitation(s) to avoid it/them being interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph (e.g., by reciting sufficient structure to perform the claimed function); or (2) present a sufficient showing that the claim limitation(s) recite(s) sufficient structure to perform the claimed function so as to avoid it/them being interpreted under 35 U.S.C. 112(f) or pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 112, sixth paragraph. Double Patenting The nonstatutory double patenting rejection is based on a judicially created doctrine grounded in public policy (a policy reflected in the statute) so as to prevent the unjustified or improper timewise extension of the “right to exclude” granted by a patent and to prevent possible harassment by multiple assignees. A nonstatutory double patenting rejection is appropriate where the conflicting claims are not identical, but at least one examined application claim is not patentably distinct from the reference claim(s) because the examined application claim is either anticipated by, or would have been obvious over, the reference claim(s). See, e.g., In re Berg, 140 F.3d 1428, 46 USPQ2d 1226 (Fed. Cir. 1998); In re Goodman, 11 F.3d 1046, 29 USPQ2d 2010 (Fed. Cir. 1993); In re Longi, 759 F.2d 887, 225 USPQ 645 (Fed. Cir. 1985); In re Van Ornum, 686 F.2d 937, 214 USPQ 761 (CCPA 1982); In re Vogel, 422 F.2d 438, 164 USPQ 619 (CCPA 1970); In re Thorington, 418 F.2d 528, 163 USPQ 644 (CCPA 1969). A timely filed terminal disclaimer in compliance with 37 CFR 1.321(c) or 1.321(d) may be used to overcome an actual or provisional rejection based on nonstatutory double patenting provided the reference application or patent either is shown to be commonly owned with the examined application, or claims an invention made as a result of activities undertaken within the scope of a joint research agreement. See MPEP § 717.02 for applications subject to examination under the first inventor to file provisions of the AIA as explained in MPEP § 2159. See MPEP § 2146 et seq. for applications not subject to examination under the first inventor to file provisions of the AIA . A terminal disclaimer must be signed in compliance with 37 CFR 1.321(b). The filing of a terminal disclaimer by itself is not a complete reply to a nonstatutory double patenting (NSDP) rejection. A complete reply requires that the terminal disclaimer be accompanied by a reply requesting reconsideration of the prior Office action. Even where the NSDP rejection is provisional the reply must be complete. See MPEP § 804, subsection I.B.1. For a reply to a non-final Office action, see 37 CFR 1.111(a). For a reply to final Office action, see 37 CFR 1.113(c). A request for reconsideration while not provided for in 37 CFR 1.113(c) may be filed after final for consideration. See MPEP §§ 706.07(e) and 714.13. The USPTO Internet website contains terminal disclaimer forms which may be used. Please visit www.uspto.gov/patent/patents-forms. The actual filing date of the application in which the form is filed determines what form (e.g., PTO/SB/25, PTO/SB/26, PTO/AIA /25, or PTO/AIA /26) should be used. A web-based eTerminal Disclaimer may be filled out completely online using web-screens. An eTerminal Disclaimer that meets all requirements is auto-processed and approved immediately upon submission. For more information about eTerminal Disclaimers, refer to www.uspto.gov/patents/apply/applying-online/eterminal-disclaimer. Allowable Subject Matter Claims 1-22 are allowable over prior arts of record. The following is an examiner’s statement of reasons for indicating allowability over prior arts of record: After consideration of the applicant’s correspondence filed on February 27, 2025 through examination of the application, claims, and conducted search, the pertinent prior arts of record, either taken alone or in combination neither anticipates nor renders obvious the claimed subject matter of the instant application when taken as a whole and therefore claims 1-22 having the following features is allowable over prior arts based on condition after resolving any outstanding objections or rejections provided in this Office Action Correspondence. The current application says wireless setup for projectors and other displays can be difficult for ordinary users, especially when using smartphones or tablets. It also notes a risk that unrelated nearby devices could connect, causing unintended transmission or information leakage. Another issue is distinguishing a host’s terminal from participant terminals and controlling which devices may connect or what they may do. The current application provides easier connection plus better control over which secondary terminals are allowed to participate. To provide this solution, the system first authenticates or identifies the main terminal, then uses that terminal’s permission information to generate a displayable connection image for a chosen secondary terminal. The secondary terminal captures the projected image and sends back decoded connection data, letting the display system verify the terminal before granting access. This reduces manual setup steps while limiting connection to permitted devices only. As per claim 1: a connection controller configured to manage wireless communication with the first terminal device and with the second terminal device; and a connection image controller configured to provide a terminal connection image including permission information for connecting the second terminal device to the projection apparatus, based on terminal connection permission information for connection of the second terminal device, after receiving control information from the first terminal device, allowing the second terminal device to connect with the projection apparatus, wherein the projector projects the terminal connection image provided by the connection image controller, wherein the LAN communicator receives second information for connecting the second terminal device with the projection apparatus, the second information is generated by capturing the terminal connection image by the second terminal device and transmitted from the second terminal device, and wherein the connection controller allows the second terminal device to connect the projection apparatus based on the second information received from the second terminal device. As per claim 9: receiving control information from the first terminal device that is previously wireless-connected to the projection apparatus, the control information for connecting the second terminal device; providing the terminal connection image including permission information for connecting the second terminal device with the projection apparatus; projecting the terminal connection image provided by the connection image controller; receiving second information for connecting the second terminal device with the projection apparatus, wherein the second information generated by capturing the terminal connection image by the second terminal device and transmitted from the second terminal device; and allowing the second terminal device to connect the projection apparatus based on the second information received from the second terminal device. As per claim 14: a connection controller configured to manage wireless communication with the first terminal device and with the second terminal device, and a connection image controller configured to provide a terminal connection image including permission information for connecting the second terminal device to the projection apparatus, based on terminal connection permission information for connection of the second terminal device, after the LAN communicator receiving control information for allowing the second terminal device to connect with the projection apparatus from the first terminal device under condition that the second terminal device does not connect with the projection apparatus via the LAN communicator and that only the first terminal device among terminal devices connects with the projection apparatus via the LAN communicator, wherein the projector projects the terminal connection image provided by the connection image controller, wherein the LAN communicator receives second information for connecting the second terminal device with the projection apparatus, the second information generated by capturing the terminal connection image by the second terminal device and transmitted from the second terminal device, and wherein the connection controller allows the second terminal device to connect the projection apparatus based on the second information received from the second terminal device. The prior art made of record and not relied upon is considered pertinent to applicant's disclosure. WATANABE et al. (US 20140282991 A1): describes a system that links a user’s account to a specific terminal device before allowing that device to use services from an information processing apparatus such as a file server. The user first logs in from a client device and requests a QR code or similar image that contains authentication information. The terminal device scans that image, obtains the authentication information, and sends it together with device identification information to the server. If the authentication information matches, the server stores the device information together with the user information. After that, the terminal can send service requests, such as file browsing, printing, projection, or upload-related requests. The server checks that both the registered user information and the registered device information are present before providing the service. This means that even if a user name or password is disclosed, a third party still cannot use the service without the paired device. The system also supports deleting a registered device if it is lost or stolen. Savage et al. (US 20140366091 A1 ): describes a conference-management system that lets a user prepare, schedule, and run a presentation from a remote device. The user can upload multiple presentation files, which are stored as a single, organized presentation or sequence. The system authenticates the user through a remote platform and a local conference room system before allowing the meeting to proceed. It then schedules the presentation time using preferences stored in the user profile. The system also applies setup preferences, such as device settings, to conference-room equipment automatically. When the meeting time is confirmed, the system downloads the needed files and settings to the local conference room device. During the live presentation, the system can advance from one file to the next automatically when the prior file ends. It can also control multiple local presentation devices, such as projectors, displays, and computing devices. The system may support QR-code-based authentication and launch a presentation management application on the user device. After the presentation, the system can delete or synchronize content so the presentation remains organized and secure. Knodt et al. (US 20140244720 A1 ): describes a system that lets a user use a mobile device to send electronic content to one or more display devices through a “virtual projector.” The content can be shown on a physical projector, an electronic whiteboard, or other display devices, while also being made available to other client devices through web pages. In practice, the same presentation can be shared to multiple screens at once. The system can also combine content from different sources into one shared presentation. A collaboration server can track changes made on one device and send those changes to other devices. The application also lets a mobile device create videoconferencing sessions by scanning or otherwise capturing encoded site information from a map. The map can show conference rooms or other videoconferencing sites and their status. The mobile device collects the site identifiers and sends them to a videoconferencing system. The system then sets up the session between the selected sites. The application also describes using encoded data, such as QR codes, to provide access to files or other information. RONGO et al. (US 20150121470 A1) is about getting a “smart” device onto a network even when the device has little or no screen, buttons, or normal setup interface. A first IoT device can announce that it wants to join by sending a setup request over a nonstandard link such as light, sound, infrared, or power lines. A second device that is already on the network receives that request and acts as a nearby helper. The helper device can check whether a user or other authority should allow the new device to join. If approved, the helper sends back network access information, such as an SSID or passphrase, and may also send operating rules. The first device then joins the network using that information. The helper also relays information between the new device and the network. The approach is aimed at small appliances and similar devices that are difficult to set up using conventional Wi-Fi onboarding.
